2009 Wrap Up, Let’s Start Planning for 2010

On behalf of the entire GIS Day Committee, I would like to thank our sponsors for their participation in GIS Day Savannah 2009. Without their support, this event would not be possible.

More than 150 local 8^th grade students, from both private and public schools, attended GIS Day in 2009. The event allowed them to meet more than 30 regional professionals and learn how they use GIS in their specific industries, universities, and government agencies. In addition, the GIS committee led three 30-minute workshops to introduce students to GIS technology in hands-on activities.

Through sponsorships, GIS Day Savannah 2009 raised $6500 to use for future GIS education in Chatham County. The funds will be used for teacher workshops, developing GIS curriculum, and implementing a GIS lab in the Savannah Chatham Public School System.

GIS Day update & article

The GIS Day Committee is back to work preparing for GIS Day Savannah 2009. So far this year, we are working on updating the event format to improve the students’ educational experience. While we are working on these details, we are also updating the sponsorship and registration forms for 2009. In the meantime, the Spring 2009 ArcUser from ESRI has a great article describing how a teacher in Kansas has used GIS in his classrom to inspire students to solve real world problems, “Combining Math, GIS, and Community Service.” The article can be found at the following link: http://www.esri.com/news/arcuser/0309/obenhaus.html.
